This is why Second Move (movement directly after attacking using any unused Movement Power) would be good with certain units. It would allow for more attacks on chokepoint guards. The units wouldn't necessarily be long range, but effectively are except for the firing over terrain and/or units part, providing they use it to retreat.
It was done in Nectaris, with two units, both having moderate at best defense: the MB-4 Lynx and MB-5 Rabbit. Lynx could move-range 2 fire-move but had shoddy ATK; and Rabbit could move-range 1 fire-move with high ATK. With either, you effectively had a Range 1 to AVG5 (average of 5) unit as long as both destinations (the space from where to attack and the space to move to after attacking) weren't occupied. Although that range could be reduced easily by terrain or enemy units.
